A theorist of economic harmony and an opponent of statism, socialism and other avatars of what he called legal plunder, Frédéric Bastiat (1801-1850) left us a rich, fruitful and — considering his death at the age of 49 — astonishingly vast work. In addition to his Complete Works, recently republished by the Coppet Institute, we have tried to offer a synthetic work. To maintain his inimitable sense of formula, his literary talent, the accuracy of his insights, but also the strength of his prophecies, there was no better way than to compile, on all subjects, the expression he gave of his ideas. We will therefore find in this book the concentrate, the essence of the work of this economist. Will the reader feel for himself, as we have felt ourselves, the strength and the great timeliness of Bastiat's ideas, on such sensitive subjects as public spending, taxes, free trade, free trade, socialism, socialism, unemployment or social protection? That's what we hope for. — So that he comes out of it grown, changed, as we are in contact with all the great minds.
