Published in 1944, this liberal manifesto denouncing the totalitarianisms of the 20th century was a considerable success. According to Friedrich A. Hayek, there is no difference in nature between Hitlerism and Stalinism and there is only a simple difference in degree between social democracy, socialism and communism, because all these ideologies carry a threat to individual and public liberties. “If we want to build a better world, we must find the courage to make a new start, even if it means stepping back in order to make a better leap,” he concludes. We must therefore abandon “the road of servitude”, denounced in the book, and commit ourselves to that of freedom.
